A Love Letter to Indigenous Blooms

There is something deeply nostalgic about working with indigenous South African flowers. For Box One, Return Home, I wanted to create an arrangement that celebrated the wild beauty of our landscape, textured, untamed, and full of soul. Every stem tells a story of mountain air, dry velds, and golden African light.

I’ll admit, I’ve never traditionally been the biggest fan of proteas. I’ve always leaned toward softer, more romantic blooms. But flowers have a beautiful way of teaching us to see familiar things differently. Working with indigenous flowers for this box felt grounding and unexpectedly inspiring.

The arrangement begins with soft asparagus fern to create movement, followed by cascading amaranthus for drama and richness. At the centre sits the King Proteas, bold, sculptural, and unmistakably South African, balanced by playful pincushion proteas and the delicate softness of Blushing Brides. Burgundy leucadendrons, wax flower, and tall grasses add depth, texture, and an untamed elegance throughout.

Return Home became more than just a floral arrangement. It became a reminder that sometimes beauty reveals itself when we allow ourselves to rediscover what has always been there.
