How The Story Began...

There are certain places in the world that are undeniably beautiful, and for many years, The Cotswolds was ours. Life in England felt almost suspended in time, soft rolling hills wrapped in misty mornings, stone cottages with climbing roses, tiny villages tucked between winding country lanes. Every season arrived with its own kind of poetry. Spring scattered wildflowers along garden walls, autumn painted the trees in burnt amber tones, and winter carried the comforting glow of fires burning behind old cottage windows.
It was beautiful. Deeply beautiful.
But it was never home.
No matter how picturesque the landscape was, there was always a quiet ache living underneath it all. A longing I could never quite explain. The kind that arrives unexpectedly when hearing a familiar accent in a grocery store, or when remembering the scent of summer rain falling onto dry South African soil. Home has a way of living inside you, no matter how far away you go.
When it was time we were finally brought us back to South Africa, it felt less like returning to a place and more like returning to ourselves.
I had missed everything, the warmth of the light, the untamed beauty of the gardens, the loudness of family lunches, the unpredictability, the soul of this country. England had been elegant and refined, but South Africa held my heart in a way nowhere else ever could.
And through every chapter of that journey, flowers quietly carried me.
Even on the saddest days, flowers made life feel softer. They became little reminders that beauty still existed, even when I struggled to see it myself. A handful of blooms in the kitchen sink, petals opening slowly on the dining table, the scent of greenery drifting through the house, these tiny rituals grounded me. My family always knew that if there were flowers in the house, Mom was happy.
Looking back now, I realise flowers were never simply flowers to me. They were memory keepers. Comforters. Small pieces of hope.
Coming home awakened something I thought I had perhaps left behind in another season of life. Creativity returned gently at first, then all at once. It felt like something deep inside me had been waiting patiently for this return home, not just physically, but emotionally too.
And it was in that season that The Flower Recipe Box began to bloom.
What started as a quiet creative spark soon became an overwhelming need to make something meaningful with my hands again. I wanted to create more than just a box, I wanted to create an experience. Something nostalgic and soulful that celebrated flowers not only for their beauty, but for the emotions and memories they hold.
The idea came together organically after returning home. Surrounded again by the colours, textures, and abundance of South African flowers, inspiration seemed to find me everywhere. The Flower Recipe Box became a reflection of everything I had been feeling, love for home, the comfort of creativity, and the healing beauty found in nature.
Each box is lovingly handmade and hand-painted by Talia Botha, a dear friend whose watercolour work carries the same softness and emotion I hoped the boxes would hold. Together, we created our very first design, “Return Home,” which now feels like the perfect beginning to this story.
Because in many ways, that is exactly what The Flower Recipe Box became, a love letter to returning home. To beauty. To friendship. To flowers. And to the quiet joy of beginning again.
